GALLERY AT GREEN LIBRARY Eleke: Sacred Beaded Regalia of the Orisha

Running from November to December, 2013 the Gallery at Green Library will be featuring a colorful assortment of beaded works by artists Alexander Fernandez and Martin Tsang in Eleke: Sacred Beaded Regalia of the Orisha.  Coinciding with the exhibit will be a lecture from FIU Professor of Anthropology, Dr. Dennis Wiedman.
From the artists, "The pieces on display are examples of Afro-Cuban religious beadwork from the Lukumi orisha tradition. They are a mix of items that we have made ourselves, and some that have been inherited and handed down by elders. They are all items that are fully consecrated and used ritually, normally located in private, household shrines for the orishas. It is a rare opportunity for these items to be viewed by the public."

Although the pieces on display are not for sale, the artists do make beadwork for the Lukumi/Orisha community on a commission basis. Contact the artists with any inquiries at: eleke.afrocuban.lukumi.exhibit@gmail.com

Gallery at Green Library: May Exhibit

Now on view at the Gallery at Green Library, "Art as Process" from the Children's Creative Learning Center.

The Children’s Creative Learning Center at FIU’s Art Exhibit titled “Art as Process” was designed to reflect the nature of the children’s experiences in Art as well as to highlight other areas of daily CCLC activities all of which are a process.  Because the children ranging in age from two to six are highly visual learners, whether the content area is science experimentation, gardening, life cycles, emergent literacy or math, the documentation is interpreted through visual imagery and is integrated through the children’s sensory system.  Photographs help guide the sequence of events for the children as they will for visitors to the gallery who will also get a sense of time and place by looking at some of the historical images marking the Center’s 37th Anniversary.

Green Library Gallery: "Winter in Cuba" Exhibit

"Winter in Cuba" offers a glimpse of the heyday of travel and tourism in pre-1950s Cuba.  The Elena Kurstin Collection of Cuban Memorabilia is a treasure trove of postcards, menus, brochures, magazines, and even swizzle sticks from hotels, night clubs and the haunts of many a mobster of that period.  This exhibition gives a glimpse of the Havana so popular with tourists... not only what to see in Cuba, but how to get there by air or by sea.
