Protect your Patrons from Predatory Publishers
Speaker: Jeffrey Beall, University of Colorado-Denver (live webinar from USF)
This webinar will provide an overview of the issues related to scholarly open-access publishing, focusing on the unintended consequences such as predatory publishers and their abuse of the gold open-access model. He encourages all scholars to increase scrutiny of publishers of their research.

FIU’s Open Access Publishing Fund Q&A
Faculty and doctoral students are invited to a Q&A about the new OA publishing fund, to begin on November 1, to subsidize author’s fees and OA membership discounts with various publishers.

Open Access Week Chat with Peter Suber
This webcast will be an interactive interview and discussion with Peter Suber, Director of the Harvard Office of Scholarly Communications and major proponent of the Open Access movement (see bit.ly/petersuber for his credentials.)

The Colombian journalist Erasmo Padilla will present the second lecture of our series, Viernes de Musicalia (Fridays of Musicalia). Mr. Padilla collected many interviews of singers and composers, all of which were recently published in his book Tengo un Filin. We are going to enjoy and re-live the filin (feeling) by listening to songs, such as, "Si Me Comprendieras," "Contigo en la Distancia," "22 Anos," and "Palabras," among others. Special guest -- Martin Rojas 
Banned Book Week 2013 will be held September 22-28.
The FIU Libraries and the Diaz-Ayala Collection invite you to come and enjoy a Latin-American music lecture. Cuban musicologist Euridice Losada will present the first lecture in our series, "Viernes de Musicalia/Friday of Musicalia." As an expert in Cuban and Latin-American music, Professor Losada will share with us her knowledge of "La Cancion de Salon en America Latina." We will all enjoy works from composers such as Ernesto Lecuona, Moises Simons, and Agustin Lara, among other relevant musicians. In addition, we will be entertained with video clips and great conversation.
