EVENT: Faculty Book Readings Series, featuring Professor Vernon Dickson

Join us for a new installment of the Faculty Book Readings Series this Wednesday, 12/04 at 3pm.   Professor Vernon Dickson will discuss his new book, "Emulation on the Shakespearean Stage." The work explores social and rhetorical theories and practices of imitation and emulation through their enactment on the English Renaissance stage and examines their cultural significance in the often touted age of imitation. Professor Dickson is an active member of the Shakespeare Association of American and the Rhetoric Society of American. He has published articles related to Shakespeare, the Renaissance, rhetorical theory, exemplarity, and emulation in Renaissance Quarterly, Studies in English Literature, and the Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America.

EVENT: Viernes de Musicalia - music, conversation, refreshments, & a chance to win!

The FIU Libraries and the Cristobal Diaz-Ayala Collection invite you to another Latin American-infused evening of music, conversation, and light refreshments on Friday, November 22nd, beginning at 7pm, Green Library rm 220, Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

The Colombian journalist Erasmo Padilla will present the second lecture of our series, Viernes de Musicalia (Fridays of Musicalia).  Mr. Padilla collected many interviews of singers and composers, all of which were recently published in his book Tengo un Filin.  We are going to enjoy and re-live the filin (feeling) by listening to songs, such as, "Si Me Comprendieras," "Contigo en la Distancia," "22 Anos," and "Palabras," among others.  Special guest -- Martin Rojas 

Please join us in this spectacular evening of music, plus a giveaway!  Two autographed copies of the book Yo Tengo Un Filin, by Erasmo Padilla, will be raffled.

ZOMBIES! Take one home!

Library Amnesty Day! Celebrate National Library Week!

It's National Library Week, and FIU Libraries is celebrating by giving you a pass and offering you a pardon!  One day only, Wednesday, April 17th, return your overdue or "lost" items and all fines/fees will be waived!  No questions asked, just bring the items back...  details and and some rules described below. 

EXHIBIT: Cuban Dominoes

On view at the Gallery at Green Library, April 1 - 30, an exhibition of handmade domino sets, made by the students of FIU School of Architecture.  A domino tournament with the designers is also being scheduled, date and time to be announced, so stay tuned!

This Friday, March 29th the FIU Libraries will be hosting its 2013 GIS Day. 

The theme for this year’s GIS Day is “GeoHumanities: Drawing New Connections in Time & Space”.  Join the FIU GIS Center + Map & Imagery User Services (MIUS) for a fun-filled, single-day mini-conference of:

• guest lectures by visiting and FIU’s own GIS experts
• a hands-on workshop focusing on GIS and US Census datas
• an all-day display of GIS posters
• a student poster competition for FIU and non-FIU students
• GIS/map games

What is the event about?
GIS Day is about providing an engaging, discourse-generating forum for people to discuss the technology, applications, and power of Geographic Information systems (GIS). GIS represents a relatively new set of technologies that are rapidly changing our world by creating a heightened geographic/spatial consciousness. Natural and social scientists, decision-makers, and the general public are increasingly engaging and expanding the potential of GIS to improve the way human beings interact with planet Earth. It’s a very exciting time, with some even positing that global society is collectively undergoing a geospatial revolution. Here at FIU, we’re celebrating GIS with a range of activities, including guest lectures, multiple workshop sessions, GIS/map games, an all-day poster-viewing session, and a student poster competition. We’ve essentially planned a one-day, multi-site (MMC & BBC) mini-conference!

Free Access: Queen Victoria's Journals

For the month of June, ProQuest is providing free public access to the personal journals of Queen Victoria .  This unique resource was developed in partnership by the Bodleian Libraries, the Royal Archives and ProQuest.

"The journals, which span Victoria’s lifetime and consist of 141 volumes numbering over 33,000 pages, have never been published in their entirety and previously were only accessible by appointment at the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle. In addition to autograph diaries begun by the youthful Princess Victoria, there are edited versions from her later years, redacted and transcribed by the Queen’s daughter, Princess Beatrice."
